CM to dedicate UNESCO certificate for Jaipur

  • Jaipur was declared a world heritage site last year in July. The city is known for:
    • Grid plan-based architecture
    • Buildings constructed with a pink facade
  • CM of Rajasthan will dedicate the certificate for Jaipur to the people at a function on 5th
  • Some aspects of the city which impressed the International Council on Monuments and sites during the inspection in 2018 include:
    • The architecture of streets with colonnades→intersecting the centre→creating large public squares called
    • Uniform facades of markets
    • Residences and temples in the main streets
  • A function is to be organised in the city on 5 February 2020 where UNESCO director will also pay a visit. A brochure on “intangible heritage promotion project” will be released at the function.
  • The project is signed between the Tourism Department and UNESCO. Other features include:
    • Aims at creating 10 new cultural tourism sites in the State
    • Cost→ 7.50 crore
    • Will benefit around 1,500 artists in Jodhpur, Barmer, Jaisalmer and Bikaner→districts known for folk music and traditional handicrafts.

‘Healing Christ’ statue enters URF book of world records

  • A tri-metal sculpture of Christ, also known as Healing Christ, was unveiled at the Believer’s Church Medical College (BCMC) Hospital in Thiruvalla on December 1, 2014.
  • The statue was sculpted by Balakrishnan Achary in a time of 18 months.
  • It is made up of zinc, copper and velutheeyam (an alloy of tin and aluminium. The BCMC authorities submitted an application to Universal Records Forum’s (URF) on September 16.
  • Now it has finally entered the URF book of world records.
  • It is a 368-cm tall statue, weighing 2,400 kglargest one of its kind in the world.

28 special courts to clear POCSO cases

  • 28 special courts for clearing pending cases in two years under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act will start functioning in Kerala before March.
  • Nearly 7,000 POCSO cases are pending.

7 in 100 Anganwadi beneficiaries in cities

  • According to the government’s response to an RTIout of 100 anganwadi beneficiaries in the country, only 7 are from urban areas→because of lack of Anganwadis in cities.
  • The ICDS provides for Anganwadis or day-care centres which deliver a package of following 6 services to children between the age of six months to six years, pregnant women and lactating mothers:
    • Supplementary nutrition
    • Pre-school non-formal education
    • Nutrition and health education
    • Immunisation
    • Health check-up
    • Referral services to hospitals
  • The 2011 Census32% of the Indian population lives in cities.
  • NITI Aayog has prepared a draft working paper, after being approved it will be circulated to various Ministries for consultations.
  • Urban areas are set to receive a renewal focus under the government’s Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS).
  • The renewal was required because ICDS models working in rural areas may not work in urban areas because of:
  • Higher population density
  • Transportation challenges
  • Migration

Several pacts to be signed at Defexpo 2020: Rajnath

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said that several Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) and Request For Proposals (RFP) will be signed at the Defexpo 2020 with several countries.
  • The Defexpo 2020 is to be held in Lucknow.
  • It will see a conclusion of various cooperative agreements between India and foreign companies to manufacture defence equipment in India.

Bhutan ends free entry to Indian tourists

  • Beginning from July 2020, Bhutan will levy a daily fee of Rs 1,200 ($17) for “regional tourists” from India, Maldives and Bangladesh.
  • The decision has ended decades of free entry to Indian tourists visiting Bhutan.
  • The fee is called as Sustainable Development Fee (SDF)→ meant to help government regulate the increasing numbers in tourists’ traffic.
  • Other foreign tourists are charged $65 along with compulsory flat “cover charge” of $250 per day.
  • Indians mainly travelled to the developed western part of the country. To increase tourism in eastern Bhutan, the government has reduced SDF in 11 out of total 20 districts which fall in eastern Bhutan.
