Measures in place to prevent tiger killings: CM

  • Last month, five locals killed a tigress and her three cubs in Mahadayi Wildlife Sanctuary.
  • An attention motion was called in the Goa’s Legislative Assembly: demanded central agencies should probe possible involvement of poaching gangs or mining lobbies in the killings.
  • To this, the CM replied that precautionary measures were taken and the case is been looked at from a humanitarian point of view.

PM pitches for the boost to defence exports

  • As said by PM, India became the largest importer of arms because it did not utilize its defence opportunities and abilities to full potential after independence.
  • He has targeted defence exports worth Rs 35,000 crore in the next year.
  • He said at the inaugural of 11th Defexpo that after independence our policies and strategies remained focused on imports: policy reforms have been done after 2014.
  • From Rs 2,000 crore in 2014, the defence exports of India rose to Rs 17,000 crore in the last two years: India turning into a manufacturing hub for military platforms.
  • He added that defence manufacturing will make us self-reliant and we will be prepared to help friendly countries in the region if required.
  • An integrated defence plan is being conceptualized with focus on start-ups and Micro, Medium and Small Enterprises (MSMEs):200 defence start-ups likely to come up to support indigenization.
  • PM also spoke about the importance of Artificial Intelligence (AI):government has created a roadmap for its use in the defence sector.

Navy will have its third Scorpene sub this year

  • The third Scorpene submarine, Karanj, will be delivered to India by December this year and all six deliveries will be completed by 2022, said Nicolas de LA Villemarque.
  • Karanj was launched into the water in January 2018. It is currently in advanced stages of sea-trials.
  • Scorpene has the ability to be equipped with Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system.
  • The first Scorpene submarine, Kulvari, was commissioned in 2018.
  • Second Scorpene, Khanderi, was commissioned in September 2019.

CPCB pulls up 14 coal plants

  • CPCB pulled 14 thermal power plants for not complying with the December 31, 2019 deadline to limit sulphur dioxide emissions.
  • Following is the number of power plants state-wise which have missed the deadline:
    • Haryana:5
    • Punjab:3
    • Uttar Pradesh:2
    • Andhra Pradesh:2
    • Telangana:2
    • Tamil Nadu:1
  • The 14 plants have been given a deadline of this month to explain why they have not complied with the norms and why action should not be taken against them.
  • CPCB can impose steep fines or even shut the unit under the provisions of the Environment Protection Act.
  • As per the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), the norms can help reduce particulate matter (PM) emissions by 35%, nitrogen oxide emissions by 70% and sulphur dioxide emissions by 85% by 2026-27 with affecting the business of the plants.

Cooperative banks to come under Reserve Bank purview

  • Taking account of the recent Punjab & Maharashtra Cooperative (PMC) Bank crisis, the Union Cabinet has approved amendments to the Banking Regulation Act to bring 1,540 cooperative banks under Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
  • Cooperative banks:8.6 lakh account holders: total deposit- Rs 5 lakh crore.
  • The amendments are done to strengthen the financial stability of cooperative banks and boost public confidence in the banking system.

Govt. reviewing dividend tax rules for real estate, infra investment trusts

  • The Union Budget 2020-21 announced the scrapping of the Dividend Distribution Tax for investors in real estate investment trusts (REITs) and infrastructure investment trusts (InvITs).
  • Now the government is reviewing the negative implications of the scrapping of Tax for investors in real estate investment trusts (REITs) and infrastructure investment trusts (InvITs).
  • Dividend income was tax-free in the hands of REIT and InvIT investors till now: people with high net-worth often put their money in these trusts.
  • Now, according to the Budget, the dividend income in the hands of investors will be taxable.
  • The Finance Minister also, said that “We don’t intend to tax or burden InvITs”.
