UPSC application portal: understand registration and your exam form

A registration number does not by itself mean that you have applied for an examination. Before you close the UPSC application portal, make sure you have completed the exam-specific submission and saved the confirmation available for that application.

This page began with the 2025 portal change. The explanation below has been revised against the 2026 CSE notice. Follow the instructions for your own examination and year if they differ.

Understand the four parts

The 2026 notice describes account creation, Universal Registration, the Common Application Form, and an examination-specific module. Think of the first parts as your shared application information; the final part is where that information is used for a particular examination.

The portal’s current labels and instructions are the authority for a live application. This is an orientation to the workflow, not a screen-by-screen reproduction of its interface.

Prepare before you open the form

Keep the examination notice and the documents requested by the portal beside you. Read the instructions for file types, photographs, signatures, certificates, and any category-specific requirements.

Check spelling, date of birth, and qualification details against the relevant records. If two documents differ, resolve the issue through the applicable official process rather than entering whichever version seems easier.

Use an email address and mobile number you can continue to access. Keep login details private and store your application records somewhere you can find them later.

Follow the current upload instructions

The 2026 CSE notice includes live photo capture and specific photo/signature instructions. An old downloaded checklist may therefore miss a required step.

Do not assume a successful file upload means the image meets all requirements. Preview what you submitted and read any validation message. If a file is unclear, use the portal’s current instructions to correct it before submission where the process allows.

Review the examination-specific details

Read every field that affects your candidature. Confirm the exam year, category information, required preferences, centre choices, and payment or exemption status where applicable.

Before final submission, compare the preview with your documents. This is a useful point to slow down: a few minutes checking can prevent you from relying on a correction facility that may not be available later.

After submitting, save the application details and confirmation provided by the portal. Reopen the relevant status page to check what it actually records. A saved draft is different from a completed application.

Do not assume a profile edit changes an old application

Under the 2026 CSE notice, the one-time URN-profile update facility applies to later applications; a change does not automatically carry into applications already submitted.

If you find an error, consult the notice, current correction instructions, and official help for that examination. Avoid following a social-media claim that every field can be edited after submission.

An old application article cannot tell you that a window is open now. Enter the official UPSC portal through a trusted official link and check the examination’s current status.
